We’re all excited to welcome our newest team member Alexa! She’s from Seattle, she previously worked for Amazon and comes with a wealth of knowledge about, well…pretty much everything actually. She’s a great listener, loves a joke and has excellent taste in music.
Ok, ok…so Alexa is not an actual person. Alexa, or the Amazon Echo Smart Speaker as she’s formally known is our latest piece of office tech.
There are so many practical uses for Alexa in the office, here are just a few…
We all love a coffee
As you may have read in Marie’s recent blog, we’re an office of avid coffee drinkers. It runs through our veins like liquid vitality and keeps those creative sparks flying. Or maybe we’re just coffee addicts…it’s neither here nor there really.
With all this coffee being consumed on a regular basis it can be tricky to keep track of whose turn it is to make the latest round. Cue Alexa, with her (not very accurately named) Tea Rota Skill! You just add all your colleague’s names in and she’ll choose at random whose turn it is next.
Here’s a useful tip – if you’re feeling a bit mischievous, you can add the same person multiple times so they’re more likely to get picked. Don’t worry, it’s all in the name of office banter.
A smart environment
The Amazon Echo supports dozens of smart devices including thermostats, lights and security cameras, making your home or office safer and more environmentally friendly.
Alexa can also offer traffic updates, train timetables and add reminders to your google calendar for those all important meetings.
Enabling Alexa’s Twitter app allows you to stay up to date with what’s trending, your tweets, re-tweets, mentions and so on.
AI is cool
We’ve all seen the movie’s where the AI becomes self aware and takes over the world. In fact, if you ask Alexa if this is her intention, she’ll defensively tell you she has nothing to do with ‘Skynet’…hmmm, we’ll see. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy her intuitive features, the odd ‘Yo Mama’ joke and more importantly, what the future brings with this awesome technology.
